About the cohort
The Bandim Health Project cohort covers both an urban population in the capital, Bissau, and a nationally representative sample across the entire country. This household level longitudinal cohort is operated as a collaboration between the Guinean Ministry of Health and University of Southern Denmark. In the urban areas a cohort of 100,000 persons in six suburbs of Bissau, the Guinean capital are followed.

In addition to household visits, data collection staff at health centres and the main hospital, complement the picture of the health status. Since its inception in 1978, the data collection has emphasised pregnancy registration to obtain accurate and unbiased information on early child mortality.
Uptake of health interventions, including vaccines for both children and adults combined with the longitudinal surveillance data enables the assessment of both targeted and overall effects of interventions on subsequent morbidity and mortality. It also provides a basis for testing potential improvements in programmes in clinical trials.
Furthermore, the individual level documentation of health service uptake allows monitoring the coverage and impact of health services available to the population.
