About the cohort
Dale-Wonsho Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS), based at Hawassa University in southern Ethiopia, was established in 2017 to generate high-quality longitudinal data on population dynamics and health outcomes. The site covers approximately 64,000 individuals across Dale and Wonsho districts of Sidama Region.
Read full cohort description
Data collection occurs in regular rounds, focusing on births, deaths, migrations, and key public health indicators, including maternal and child health, and more recently, non-communicable diseases. The HDSS is embedded within the local health and administrative systems, enabling strong community engagement and policy relevance. To date, four rounds of data have been completed.
Although the site is currently experiencing challenges with dedicated data management personnel, it remains committed to generating evidence for population health improvement and research collaboration.
