About the cohort

The Manicaland Cohort, is a population study founded in eastern Zimbabwe's Manicaland province in 1998. Its aim was to measure and track HIV prevalence, incidence, sexual behaviors, and the demographic impact of HIV across a generalized epidemic setting. At baseline (1998-2000), a household census enrolled approximately 11,453 eligible adults (men aged 17-54 and women 15-44), of whom 9,109 (≈79.

5 %) consented to participate across 12 representative sites-urban towns, agricultural estates, roadside settlements, and subsistence farms. Follow‑up surveys were conducted in multiple rounds, typically every two to three years, with nine fully completed rounds up to 2023/24.
