About this cohort
The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) in collaboration with Emory university has implemented an informal urban Population-Based Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) in Western Kenya at a site called Manyatta from the year 2017. The area has high prevalence of malaria and HIV. We do collect demographic and morbidity data by visiting households twice in a year. We have enrolled about 77000 people in 21000 households in the study area. We also work closely with Ministry of Health by engaging the community health providers commonly known as community health volunteers to report vital events (Births, deaths and pregnancies) for us. We do verbal autopsies. Several studies are layered on to the Manyatta HDSS platform such as pregnancy surveillance, Adult Advanced HIV Disease study, adult malaria study, Changemaker study, nutritional surveys, Child Health Mortality Surveillance study among other.
