About this cohort
The NUITM Kwale HDSS is located in South coast Kenya. The first phase was started in 2010, and renewed in 2021. At renewal, 60,000 persons were registered, spanning over three locations. 9 health facilities located within the HDSS area were linked, through which registration of pregnancies and births is conducted; mothers are registered during the first ANC visit and followed through to birth and child growth and development monitoring. Baseline data was collected, consisting of demographic and socio-economic characteristics. Update of data and verbal autopsy were realtime and continuous it though stopped in March 2024 and september 2024 respectively. Currently, only registration of pregnancies and births is ongoing. The HDSS has however nested 2 other cohorts; a birth cohort whose focus was on childhood stunting and presently; a pregnancy cohort whose objective will be assessment of adverse pregnancy outcomes.
