About the cohort
The Mlomp HDSS was created in 1985. It is located in the Ziguinchor Region of south-western Senegal, close to the border between Senegal and Guinea-Bissau. The Mlomp HDSS site measures around 11 km * 7 km and covers an area of 70 km2. The eleven villages are grouped together and surrounded by land flooded during the rainy season and cultivated with rice. The area is located 450 km from the national capital, Dakar.

The population under surveillance is rural, with 8 631 inhabitants in 2021. Since 1985, data have been collected through annual rounds. During each visit, investigators review the composition of all the households, based on lists of people present in each household the previous year and collecting information about births, marriages, migrations and deaths (including their causes) that have occurred since then.
Mlomp HDSS presents two specific features: relatively good access to healthcare and a low fertility rate.
