About the cohort

Established in 2009 by the Clinical Research Unit of Nanoro, the Nanoro HDSS serves as a platform for clinical trials. It is also a valuable tool for the country health authorities by generating epidemiological data for health interventions evaluation. Nanoro is located at approximately 85 kilometers from Ouagadougou the capital city. The HDSS covers 24 villages across 594.

3 square kilometers within the Nanoro health district and encompassed 14 peripheral health facilities and one referral hospital. It is a typical rural environment suitable for research on diseases of public health interest such as malaria, other infectious diseases and non-communicable diseases. The climate is a Sudano-Sahelian type, with a rainy season occurring from June to November.

The population under surveillance is estimated at 69,929 residents, predominantly engaged in subsistence farming, and animal husbandry. The main ethnic groups in the area are: Mossi (90%), Gourounsi (7%), and Fulani (1%). The Nanoro HDSS aims to: 1. Collect accurate data and establish demographic trends, health and socio-economic rates. 2.

Evaluate the epidemiology of specific diseases, support the conduct of clinical trials and monitoring the effectiveness of health interventions. 3. Provide comprehensive data easy to use by researchers and national health policies makers.
