About this cohort
The Niakhar HDSS was created in 1962 by the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD) of Senegal to face the shortcomings of the civil registration system and provide demographic indicators. The HDSS is located 135 km east of Dakar, in the continental Sahelian-Sudanese climatic zone. The study area, and the frequency of rounds, have evolved over time. At present the study zones covers 203 km2 and 30 villages. 8 of which have been under demographic surveillance since 1962 and 22 since 1983. The population under surveillance is rural, with 56 008 inhabitants in 2023. Since 2016, the frequency of rounds has been reduced to one per year. Vital events, migrations, marital changes, pregnancies, and immunizations are routinely recorded. There is long-term collaboration between the HDSS and local health structures, and a POC (Point-Of-Care) laboratory was successfully set up in 2016. The HDSS database includes epidemiological, economic, and environmental information obtained from specific surveys. Faidherbia Flux, a long-term collaborative observatory on food security, GHG fluxes, ecosystem services, mitigation and adaptation has been set up and operated in Sob, one of the 30 villages, since 2018.
