About the cohort
The Polana Caniço Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) is a community-based platform established in 2015 to monitor demographic trends-births, fertility, mortality, and migration-in urban settings in the neighborhoods of Polana Caniço A and B, Maputo City.
Read full cohort description
As a longitudinal data system, it enables the evaluation of socioeconomic conditions and their impact on health, identification of risk factors for infectious and chronic diseases, and analysis of social determinants and causes of mortality. The HDSS provides updated estimates on key indicators, including mortality, child immunization, prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, HIV, and sexually transmitted infections.
It also monitors ART retention rates and the coverage of preventive and curative interventions in communities and health facilities. These efforts align with PEPFAR's goals, particularly in achieving the 95-95-95 targets. In addition, the HDSS helps track and detect emerging and re-emerging health threats-such as disease outbreaks and drug resistance-supporting timely public health responses.
It also serves as a research platform for testing and evaluating health interventions, including new vaccines or treatments, health education strategies, and cost-effectiveness of health programs. This system plays a vital role in informing evidence-based decision-making and strengthening the public health response in Mozambique.
