About this cohort
The Ruwenzori Demographic and Health Surveillance Initiatives Uganda Ltd (referred to as the RDHSI) formerly called Kagando HDSS, is located in western Uganda, nestled between the Mountain Rwenzori and Queen Elizabeth National Park. RDHSI is approximately 450 kilometres from Kampala, Uganda's capital city. The HDSS encompasses three sub-counties and two town councils with 75 villages in Bukonzo county, bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo. It has a populaion of population of 158,519 people as of December 2024. Agriculture is the main economic activity, the residents primarily growing coffee, cotton, maize, cassava, beans, bananas, and groundnuts, as well as rearing goats. There is also small scale trading in agricultural products and general merchandise in addition to the services sector like private healthcare, catering, hospitality, and artisans. The source of water for domestic use is from five main streams, two gravity flow schemes while the town councils are supplied by the national utility company. The HDSS is served by two general Hospitals, Bwera, a 200-bed capacity public and Kagando, a 250-bed faith based facilities. The house hold census data is linked to the electronic medical records for the these two hospitals.
