About this cohort
USINGA-Umlazi Surveillance Initiative to Nurture Grassroots Action-is a population-based Health and Demographic Surveillance System designed to monitor changes in health and population indicators over time. It is one of seven nodes in the South African Population Research Infrastructure Network (SAPRIN), which includes four rural and three peri-urban nodes. USINGA is located in KwaZulu-Natal, Umlazi township in Wards 79 and 82, covering about 42,000 people across an 8.2 km² Demographic Surveillance Area (DSA). To meet SAPRIN's minimum target of 100,000 individuals per node, expansion into Ward 88 is underway, which is estimated to have a population of 52,000. By the end of 2025, we expect to have a total population of 100,000 in our surveillance.
